Day 1 (15/06/10) – Flying To Hurghada

We had an early flight out from Manchester direct to Hurghada (which was a real relief, as when I went to Hurghada in March, we had to go via London, then Cairo. This was because our stay was for such a short period of time) Neil was due to pick me up at 5.30am and I as I had only just finished packing my suitcase at 2am, I hadn’t had much sleep, what are five hour plane journeys for? At 5am I text Neil, asking if he had my flight ticket. His immediate reply was “No, I gave it you”. Needless to say, there was a moment of panic, luckily he was only pulling my leg… cheers for that Neil.

When we got to the airport, we met with Nick Montgomery (Sheffield United FC) and his wife Josie. We have helped Nick furnish his apartment in Sahl Hasheesh and as he is going out to view his apartment for the first time the very same week that we were there. We had arranged to meet.

The flight seemed to pass quickly enough for myself, although I am not sure about the rest of the passengers as Neil says he could hear me snoring even with his headphones in. We arrived in Hurghada at around 4.30pm and the heat hit us as soon as we stepped off the plane, sure makes a difference from the miserable weather we have been getting in Manchester recently.

We are staying at the Soly Mar Hotel which is just a short drive from the airport. When I got to the Hotel I did not know what to expect as the cost seemed ‘cheap’. You can read more on our review of the Soly Mar Hotel.

That evening we had arranged to meet with Nick and Josie and take them to Di Vinos, an Italian restaurant on Sheraton Road in Hurghada. Brazil v Korea was on TV too, so after our meal we all went down to Papas Bar at the Marina to watch the game. By the end of the night I owed Josie 10 Egyptian Pounds, I predicted 4-0 to Brazil… she went for 2-0. Final score was 2-1 and as Josie was closest, I had to empty my pockets.

All in all, today has been good, even though the majority of it spent packing in the early hours of the morning and then actually travelling. It was great to meet Nick and Josie, both really down to earth people. It will hopefully be a very good week.
